A personal SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats and has many definitions and uses, but overall, it’s an exercise and analysis that is used to identify internal strengths and weaknesses along with external opportunities and threats. It can be used in many different environments, for example, within the business field, companies will perform a SWOT analysis on their business, but a personal SWOT is performed on your own individual self and is commonly used for self-improvement to help achieve personal and professional goals. It is called a personal SWOT, because it is also commonly used for businesses.

 

The next few slides will discuss these specific features of a SWOT in further detail, but there are numerous examples of personal SWOTs online to research and view too.

The S in SWOT stands for Strengths and is the part of the SWOT analysis that examines the various strengths of an individual, specifically assessing the various achievements one has gained, what an individual excels at including physical traits, mental traits, and emotional traits. What advantages an individual may possess, such as education, training received and any certifications gained as well. A strong support system and social network can be viewed as a strength along with any leadership skills and experience.

The W in SWOT stands for weaknesses and is the part of SWOT that individuals assess the various weaknesses and areas of improvement needed within one’s environment. This can include overall confidence levels in a particular area or any jobs, responsibilities, roles or even tasks that one avoids, such as volunteering to present in front of a group of peers. These weaknesses can also be any personal or career traits that are lacking and could be improved. Weaknesses could also include any negative personal or work habits, such as turning in work late or showing up late for a class or work consistently. Weaknesses can be a wide range of identified factors and could also range in the form of physical, mental, and emotional and will range drastically from one individual to another.

The O in SWOT stands for opportunities and is used to assess the various opportunities an individual has within a specific environment. These opportunities can include professional social media presence and networking, possible job openings and/or abilities to advance within a career or professional. They also can include any personal interests or hobbies that can lead to increased networking and new support groups. Educational opportunities are a tremendous opportunity to list within a SWOT and can include higher education, trainings, certifications, or any other educational environment. The ability to take on new and/or additional roles within a personal or work environment would be considered an opportunity because of the benefits it could provide. Lastly, technology changes/advancements could be listed as an opportunity because of the changes it could bring in one’s environment, but could possibly be a threat or even a weakness for others who are technology challenged.

The T in SWOT stands for threats and could be a challenging assessment to make for an individual due to it could be viewed as menacing. Threats could include any personal or professional obstacles, such as technology for example, though, as discussed on the previous slide, it could be viewed as a strength or even opportunity for others. Competition for job positions or career advancement could be labeled as a threat along with any personal or professional stress that can cause physical, mental, or even emotional complications. One’s overall health condition, specifically any illness or medical condition, could be labeled as a threat because of the potential it has to disrupt one achieving their goals. Lastly, any educational obstacles could be perceived as a threat, such as an inability to go back to school to get an advanced degree or certification because of time commitments.

It helps one gain insight and understanding how to utilize your own strengths in various environments along with how to improve and overcome one’s weaknesses. It helps one to identify opportunities to take within their academic, personal, and professional lives, along with any threats that could become present and proactively develop strategies to overcome them. Ultimately leading to a more clear path to achieve one’s personal goals.

Personal SWOTs can be utilized for personal, academic (student) environments. There are a number of advantages and benefits to use a personal SWOT in these environments. When using a SWOT for personal and/or student use, it can improve your overall abilities, allowing you to become a more engaged individual and student, provide insight and understanding to various obstacles and challenges that can present, highlight your own personal strengths to maximize and highlight weaknesses to improve to become a more successful person and student. It assists in identifying opportunities to take advantage and capitalize off. Finally, a personal SWOT will help one to achieve and obtain goals along with become a more self-aware individual.

 

Professionally, SWOTS can be used to identify career weaknesses, obstacles, and threats to develop strategies to overcome them and become a more efficient and successfully employee. It can be used to used to advance in career by determining areas that need to be improved upon and maximizing the strengths one has, while identifying career opportunities for career advancement and placement. Overall, it will provide a deeper insight to your career opportunities and goals along with identifying the strengths to help you achieve them and the obstacles that can impede them.
